True Crime : Streets of LA (93%)

So, you've got a grip on Vice City and made a successful Getaway in London? Where do you go from here? Why, the streets of LA of course! After a couple of flirtations with a life of crime, it's time to see what life is like on the other side of the law. It may be legal but it still ain't pretty!

Gaming has hit a golden age! No longer are players restricted in their exploration. Massive landscapes have been designed and rendered to satisfy the appetites of hungry gamers and these 3D worlds are often filled with the scum of the Earth. None more so than in True Crime: Streets of LA, a gritty adventure into the merciless world of Nick Kang - a detective with a grudge and a lot of guns.

According to the game's developers Activision, the playing area spans anywhere between 250-400 square miles, accurately recreating the vast majority of LA's bustling environment! This is by far and away the largest city ever created in a console, but size isn't everything (I'm told), it's what's inside that's important! This is where True Crime really comes into its own. Although Vice City offered a selection of heart-stopping vehicles to steal, they lacked that, well, realism. True Crime features Ferrari F50s, Honda S2000s and a whole load more. It may not seem that groundbreaking but just wait and see. You'll love it!

The visual aspect of this game was always going to come under great scrutiny. It has two very attractive predecessors to live up to and jerky character movements with plain backdrops are a definite no-no. Thankfully True Crime doesn't suffer any frame-rate slowdown or dodgy polygonal errors. All-in-all True Crime looks astounding. The camera slices round to showcase Nick's moves which is very Hollywood and interior and exterior detail borders on immense.

So now you know the story, let's get down to business. Fighting and weapons! Nasty Nick has access to more guns than Tommy Vercetti, more kung-fu style than Jackie Chan (well, almost!) and a wealth of stealth. It's all the violence you've ever wanted to inflict rolled into one!

Streets of LA is a red hot title with its sights firmly set on the top. You think you can handle the mean streets of LA? Prove it!
